Halo Wars Strategy - Covenant Strategy

When you play as the Covenant, developing a good Halo Wars strategy is critical.  A good Covenant Halo Wars strategy will keep in mind the following tactics: Leader tactics, unique Leader units, Proper Use Of Units and Buildings, and Covenant Advantages over UNSC.

Leader Tactics

Leader Powers

A good Covenant Halo Wars strategy will always utilize the Leader’s Power.  Using this Halo Wars Strategy, you should always be sure to upgrade your Leader, so that you get the full benefit of his Power.  Make sure that when applying this Halo Wars strategy you save enough resources to fuel the Leader’s Power.  If you do not plan for this huge cost, this Halo Wars strategy will fail.

Leader Transportation

A good Covenant Halo Wars strategy will utilize the Covenant’s ability to teleport units to the Leader’s location.  To use this Halo Wars strategy effectively, you should move you Leader stealthily around the map to a key position.  The next part of this Halo Wars strategy requires you to teleport your standing army across the map to your Leader.  Finally, surprise your opponent with a sneak-attack to complete this Halo Wars strategy.

A good Halo Wars strategy will always teleport a Leader out-of-combat to save his life.  Also, a good Halo Wars strategy will always require the player to save enough resources to teleport the Leader out of harms way.

Unique Leader Units

Suicide Grunts

Suicide Grunts have the “suicide” ability, which should always be used in a Halo Wars strategy.  A good Halo Wars strategy will use the “suicide” ability against opponent units that are causing the most damage or have a high cost to your opponent, or against opponent buildings of high value.  A good Halo Wars strategy will avoid using the “suicide” ability against low value, low priority targets.  Also, to fully take advantage of this Halo Wars strategy, you should wait to use the “suicide” ability until your Suicide Grunt is about to be killed.

Brutes

Brutes have the “jump jet” ability, which should always be used in a Halo Wars strategy.  A good Halo Wars strategy will use the “jump jet” ability to quickly transport Brutes to key locations.  A good Halo Wars strategy will use the “jump jet” ability to rapidly transport Brutes for a surprise-attack, or for a last-ditch defensive effort.  Also, to fully take advantage of this Halo Wars strategy, you should upgrade your Brutes as soon as possible.

Elite Honor Guards

Elite Honor Guards have the “cloak” ability, which should always be used in a Halo Wars strategy.  A good Halo Wars strategy will use the “cloak” ability against opponent infantry that are causing the most damage or have a high cost to your opponent.  A good Halo Wars strategy will avoid using the “cloak” ability against opponent aircraft.  Also, to fully take advantage of this Halo Wars strategy, you should wait to use the “cloak” ability until your Elite Honor Guards are within striking distance of the opponent.

Proper Use of Units

A good Halo Wars Strategy will always take advantage of your units that have a special “Y” ability:

- Grunts have the “stick grenade” ability that, when combined with a proper Halo Wars strategy, can be used to kill infantry or destroy vehicles.  A good Halo Wars strategy will use the “stick grenade” just before the grunt dies.  A good Halo Wars strategy will avoid using the “stick grenade” ability against units with Shields or units that will easily be healed.

- Ghosts have the “ram” ability that, when combined with a proper Halo Wars strategy, can be used to easily kill infantry.  A good Halo Wars strategy will use the “ram” ability against opponent infantry only. A good Halo Wars strategy will avoid using the “ram” ability against vehicles or buildings.

-Wraiths have the “scorch” ability that, when combined with a proper Halo Wars strategy, can be used to easily kill or damage a group of opponent infantry.  A good Halo Wars strategy will use the “scorch” ability against opponent units that are in close proximity of each other.  A good Halo Wars strategy will avoid using the “scorch” ability against heavily armored units that are spread out.

-Locusts have the “overdrive” ability that, when combined with a proper Halo Wars strategy, can be used to easily destroy opponent building.  A good Halo Wars strategy will use the “overdrive” ability only when the locust has sufficient protection from opponent fire.  A good Halo Wars strategy will avoid using the “overdrive” ability when the locust is unguarded.

-Banshees have the “boost” ability that, when combined with a proper Halo Wars strategy, can be used to easily evade opponent fire or rapidly move across the map.  A good Halo Wars strategy will use the “boost” ability to quickly withdraw from a losing battle, or to quickly change locations.

-Vampires have the “stasis” ability that, when combined with a proper Halo Wars strategy, can be used to easily destroy opponent aircraft.  A good Halo Wars strategy will use the “stasis” ability to counter opponent aircraft.

Proper Use of Buildings

A good Halo Wars strategy will always take advantage of your buildings:

-Turrets are a great way to defend your base as part of your Halo Wars strategy.  To use this Halo Wars strategy effectively, you should upgrade your Turrets to counter your opponent’s units.  This means that your Halo Wars strategy should require you to upgrade your Turrets to Plasma Mortar to counter infantry, Fuel Rod to counter vehicles, or Heavy Needler to counter aircraft.  This Halo Wars strategy will fail if you improperly upgrade your Turrets.

-Warehouses are the primary means to generate resources as part of your Halo Wars strategy.  To use this Halo Wars strategy effectively, you should upgrade your Warehouses Blessed Warehouses.  This means that your Halo Wars strategy should require you to upgrade your Warehouses as early as possible.  This Halo Wars strategy will fail if you do not upgrade your Warehouses.  Also, if resources are scarce, a good Covenant Halo Wars strategy will suggest that you recycle a building of low value, and replace it with a Warehouse.

-Temples are used as part of your Halo Wars strategy to increase your technology level.  To use this Halo Wars strategy effectively, you should build a Temple early in the match.  This means that your Halo Wars strategy should require you to build a Temple before attacking your opponent.  This Halo Wars strategy will fail if you do not build a Temple prior to an opponent attack.  Temples are also used to enable special upgrades as part of your Halo Wars strategy.  To use this Halo Wars strategy effectively, you should enable the special upgrades of the most importance.  This Halo Wars strategy will fail if you do not enable your special upgrades.  Finally, Temples are used to produce and upgrade your Leader.  To use this Halo Wars strategy effectively, you should use your Leader and his Powers early in the match.  This Halo Wars strategy will fail if you do not respawn your Leader when he is killed.

-A Hall is the primary means to produce and upgrade infantry as part of your Halo Wars strategy.  To use this Halo Wars strategy effectively, you should use your Hall to upgrade your infantry after you produce them.  This means that your Halo Wars strategy should require you to first build infantry, and then upgrade them.  This Halo Wars strategy will fail if you purchase every upgrade at your Hall.  Also, if resources are scarce, a good Covenant Halo Wars strategy will suggest that you recycle your Hall, and replace it with a Warehouse.

-Factories are the primary means to produce and upgrade vehicles as part of your Halo Wars strategy.  To use this Halo Wars strategy effectively, you should first produce vehicles, and then upgrade them.  This means that your Halo Wars strategy should require you to build your Factory as early as possible.  This Halo Wars strategy will fail if you do not upgrade your vehicles.  Also, if resources are scarce, a good Covenant Halo Wars strategy will suggest that you recycle your Factory, and replace it with a Warehouse.

-Summits are the primary means to produce and upgrade aircraft as part of your Halo Wars strategy.  To use this Halo Wars strategy effectively, you should first build your aircraft, and then upgrade them.  This means that your Halo Wars strategy should require you to build your Summit as early as possible.  This Halo Wars strategy will fail if you do not upgrade your aircraft.  Also, if resources are scarce, a good Covenant Halo Wars strategy will suggest that you recycle your Summit, and replace it with a Warehouse.

-Shield Generators are one of the best ways to protect your base as part of your Halo Wars strategy.  To use this strategy effectively, you should build your Shield Generator prior to an opponent attack.  Also, this Halo Wars strategy suggests that you upgrade your Shields at your Temple.  This Halo Wars strategy will fail if you do not build your Shield Generator prior to an opponent attack.  Also, if you are desperate and your Shield is down, a good Covenant Halo Wars strategy will suggest that you recycle your Shield Generator, and use the resources to build units.

Covenant Advantages over UNSC

A good Halo Wars strategy will take advantage of Covenant strengths, and exploit UNSC weaknesses.  As part of your Halo Wars strategy, know that Covenant players are allowed to build more units than UNSC players.  Therefore, a good Covenant Halo Wars strategy will only engage a UNSC army of a smaller, size.  This Halo Wars strategy will fail if you try to attack a much larger UNSC force.  A good Covenant Halo Wars strategy will effectively use the Leader against opponent units.  A good Covenant Halo Wars strategy will be more effective early in the match, when you can take advantage of your Leader.
